He began training with the famous Machado Brothers in Los Angeles, and was awarded his blue belt by Master Jean Jacques Machado. Brian continued training within the Machado Family under Professor Renato Magno at Street Sports BJJ in Santa Monica, CA. In 2012, Brian was awarded his Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from Prof. Magno. In a special ceremony, his belt was tied by Guru Dan Inosanto.

In 2018, Brian and his wife Jessica moved to Playas del Coco, Costa Rica, and opened Playa BJJ. His classes focus on the foundational elements of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and self-defense. He teaches practical techniques to help survive and prevail in any real-life fight situation.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art and self-defense system that focuses on grappling with particular emphasis on ground fighting. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is founded on the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger, heavier opponent by using technique and leverage to bring the fight to the ground, and then applying joint locks and chokeholds to defeat the opponent. BJJ training can be used for sport grappling tournaments and in self-defense situations. Live sparring (commonly referred to as “rolling”) plays a major role in training and development. BJJ is considered a martial art, a sport, a method for promoting physical fitness and building character, and a way of life!
